£53m RAF Waddington airfield refurbishment gets under way

Work has started on a £53m refurbishment of the airfield infrastructure at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire, home of the RAF aerobatic team, the Red Arrows. The project is due to be completed in summer 2028.

The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) is delivering the scheme on behalf of Air Infrastructure for the RAF. Lagan Aviation & Infrastructure has been appointed to carry out the works, with Ramboll UK providing technical services.

The project will refurbish several aircraft bays and taxiways, install new drainage systems and upgrade approach lighting. The works are being planned and sequenced with RAF units and station staff so that flying operations can continue during construction.

RAF Waddington is also the hub of the UK's Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) Force

Lagan Aviation & Infrastructure project director Robert Weston said the works had been planned collaboratively with the station to avoid impacts on operations.

The project is expected to be completed in summer 2028.
