Jon Bridge takes charge at Cardiff Airport amid major challenges

Cardiff Airport has appointed Jon Bridge as its new Chief Executive, effective from 3 November, marking a significant moment for Wales’ national airport as it seeks to rebuild after years of turbulence.

Bridge, a business leader with three decades of experience across retail, hospitality, and transport, joins from Welsh brewery SA Brain, where he successfully oversaw a complex restructuring and return to profitability. Other previous roles include senior positions with House of Fraser and Iceland Foods, alongside advisory work within the Welsh transport sector.

Owned by the Welsh Government since 2013, Cardiff Airport has struggled to recover from the pandemic, with annual passenger numbers still well below the 1.6m peak seen before covid. The airport posted a £4.5m pre-tax loss in 2023 and remains dependent on public subsidies, with ministers committing more than £200m over the next decade to secure its future.

Bridge faces the task of restoring growth while navigating scrutiny over state support. He inherits an airport battling competition from nearby Bristol, airline route losses, most notably with Wizz Air closing its operations, and questions over the airport’s long-term viability.

Speaking about the appointment, Bridge said, “I’m honoured to be joining Cardiff Airport at such a pivotal time. The National Airport of Wales is a vital asset for our country, providing economic benefits, jobs and ensures global connectivity. We are striving to be the first choice for airline passengers and the centre of Wales’ aviation related industry.

“I’ll be working hard with our team and partners to continue the process of diversifying the business, driving growth, developing our people and ensuring we continue to provide an excellent experience for our customers.”

Interim CEO Andy Jones will return to his non-executive role on the airport’s board.
