Chinese investment interest emerges in Doncaster Sheffield Airport reopening

South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard has confirmed that discussions have taken place with Chinese investors over potential backing for the reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, as regional leaders continue efforts to restore commercial aviation operations at the site.

The talks, first revealed by the Yorkshire Post, form part of wider efforts to secure long-term investment and commercial support for the airport’s redevelopment, which regional authorities have positioned as both an aviation project and a broader economic regeneration initiative linked to logistics, advanced manufacturing and inward investment.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport closed in 2022 following a strategic review by owner Peel Group, ending commercial passenger operations and leaving South Yorkshire without a major commercial airport. Since then, local and regional leaders have pursued plans to bring the airport back into operation through a publicly backed reopening strategy.

Reports that Chinese investors have been approached come amid increasing international competition for aviation infrastructure capital as governments and regional authorities seek external funding for airport expansion, cargo facilities and transport connectivity projects.

For UK regional airports, attracting private and international investment has become increasingly important as operators face rising infrastructure costs, pressure to modernise terminals and growing expectations around operational resilience and sustainability.

Coppard has consistently framed the Doncaster Sheffield Airport project as a wider economic growth initiative rather than solely a passenger aviation venture. The airport site has been linked to future ambitions around cargo, logistics and aerospace activity, reflecting a broader trend in the UK airport sector towards diversification beyond traditional passenger revenues. Several regional airports have increased focus on freight, maintenance and specialist aviation services in response to changing airline economics and pressure on short-haul markets.

Questions remain, however, over the long-term commercial viability of reopening Doncaster Sheffield Airport and the scale of investment required to restore full passenger operations. South Yorkshire leaders approved a £160m funding package last year to support the reopening strategy, with significant passenger operations expected to start by 2028.
