Dubai vertiport marks defining moment for global advanced air mobility

Dubai has reached a significant milestone in the development of advanced air mobility after the United Arab Emirates' General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) certified what is believed to be the world's first purpose-built commercial vertiport for electric air taxi operations.

The facility, known as VDX and developed by Skyports Infrastructure near Dubai International Airport, is intended to serve as the central hub of the emirate's planned electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) air taxi network. The certification follows a regulatory assessment covering the site's infrastructure, operational procedures, safety management systems, emergency preparedness and compliance with aviation standards.

The approval represents the latest step in Dubai's strategy to establish a commercial urban air mobility network. Skyports and Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) are developing three additional vertiports across the city to support the planned launch of air taxi services.

According to Skyports, the four-storey VDX facility covers approximately 3,100 square metres and includes two dedicated take-off and landing pads, passenger processing areas, charging infrastructure and flight operations facilities. The company has previously said the site is designed to accommodate high-frequency eVTOL operations once commercial services begin.

The certification builds on technical design approval granted by the GCAA in early 2025, allowing construction of the facility to proceed. The regulator said the latest approval confirms the vertiport meets operational and safety requirements for commercial use, although passenger services will begin only after aircraft certification and final operational approvals are completed.

Dubai has positioned advanced air mobility as part of its broader transport strategy. Its planned network is expected to use electric aircraft capable of carrying passengers on short urban routes, offering an alternative to conventional road travel.

Certified vertiports are a critical component in bringing commercial eVTOL services into operation. While prototype aircraft have conducted demonstration flights in several countries, the availability of purpose-built, regulator-approved infrastructure has been identified as one of the key prerequisites for commercial deployment.

The VDX certification is seen as an important benchmark not only for Dubai but also for the wider advanced air mobility sector. Commercial operations are expected to commence once aircraft, operators and supporting systems receive the necessary regulatory approvals, with Dubai targeting the launch of air taxi services later this year.

Duncan Walker, CEO, Skyports Infrastructure, said, "This certification is a defining moment for Advanced Air Mobility, demonstrating that the infrastructure, operational standards and regulatory frameworks required for commercial eVTOL services are now a reality. With VDX now certified and construction of the wider Dubai Air Taxi Network progressing at pace, we are one step closer to launching commercial air taxi operations, and unlocking a new era of safe, efficient and sustainable urban transport."
