Luton opens hub to streamline deliveries across the airport estate

London Luton Airport has opened a new logistics and delivery consolidation hub as part of a wider programme to modernise airport operations and support future passenger growth.

The new facility, operated in partnership with logistics company GXO, has been developed within one of three refurbished hangars at the airport and is intended to streamline the handling of goods delivered to shops, restaurants and operational facilities across the airport site. According to the airport, the hub will process hundreds of thousands of deliveries each year serving more than 50 retail and hospitality outlets.

The project is expected to create up to 30 new jobs initially, rising to around 150 positions once the wider hangar refurbishment programme has been completed. The investment forms part of an £11.5m redevelopment scheme involving the repurposing of former aviation hangar space for logistics and operational use.

The airport said the consolidation centre will reduce vehicle movements airside and centralise the screening and processing of deliveries before distribution across the terminal estate. GXO will manage the operation using digital tracking and logistics systems intended to improve visibility and coordination across the airport supply chain.

Martin Cooper, Managing Director, Technology and Consumer Goods at GXO UK and Ireland, commented, “This new consolidation centre is a great addition to London Luton Airport's operation and a project we're delighted to be part of.

“Consolidation centres like this simplify and streamline the supply chain for everyone involved – from suppliers through to the shops and restaurants serving LLA’s passengers. For almost two decades, we've operated in complex logistics environments, including airport consolidation – and we're looking forward to bringing that experience to LLA, streamlining its delivery process and making it more efficient, automated and secure.”
