Manchester Airport marks opening of expanded Terminal 2 after redevelopment

Manchester Airport has marked the formal opening of its fully redeveloped Terminal 2 as the centrepiece of a £1.3bn transformation programme. The expanded and refurbished terminal is now handling the majority of flight operations, representing a significant milestone in Manchester’s long‑term strategy.

The project has been unfolding over several years and expands Terminal 2’s footprint significantly, with new security halls, larger departure lounges, retail and dining areas, and improved passenger flows. Completion of Terminal 2 coincides with one of the busiest periods of the year as spring and summer travel peaks approach.

A large suspended artwork made from restored pieces of the iconic chandeliers that hung in the old Terminal 1 is also being installed, adding a cultural touchpoint to the modernised space.

The terminal redevelopment enables Manchester Airport to consolidate most airlines’ operations into a single modern hub. With Terminal 1 closed and Terminal 3 focused on specific carriers, the new Terminal 2 configuration supports smoother connections and greater capacity across its dual runways – a key objective of the airport’s broader strategy to enhance international connectivity from the North of England.

The fully open Terminal 2 marks the culmination of a decade‑long investment, with remaining enhancements such as additional boutiques and themed bars set to open as part of the phased rollout throughout 2026.

The terminal’s opening comes amid strong passenger growth – Manchester Airport served a record number of travellers last year – and is expected to help support new routes and expanded services in the coming seasons.
