Manchester Airport to expand Terminal 3 departure lounge by more than a third

Manchester Airport has approved a multimillion-pound expansion of Terminal 3, adding about 2,000 square metres to its departure lounge, with completion expected in 2028.

The project will increase the lounge’s floor space by more than a third, creating additional passenger space, more seating, greater levels of natural light and room for new retail units. The airport said the scheme would build on improvements already made to the terminal, which now serves Ryanair passengers exclusively.

The expansion will use space previously associated with Terminal 3’s landside operations that has been out of use since late 2025. Terminals 1 and 3 are connected, allowing parts of the former Terminal 1 building, including its entrance and security hall, to be incorporated into Terminal 3.

The latest approval follows the opening of a new entrance and security area and the Sporting Chance sports bar, which provides additional seating and views across the airfield.

Manchester Airport managing director Chris Woodroofe said the airport was now turning its attention to Terminal 3 following the redevelopment of Terminal 2, adding that the latest investment would provide more space and facilities for Ryanair passengers.

The £1.5bn decade-long investment programme in Terminal 2 has more than doubled its size and enabled it to handle about 75% of Manchester Airport’s passengers. Terminal 1 closed in March 2026, with airlines transferring to Terminal 2 and Ryanair continuing to operate from Terminal 3.

The airport said the next steps for the Terminal 3 project would include a competitive tender for retailers to occupy the additional space, with further details to be announced.
