Stansted trials overnight rail services to improve access beyond normal operating hours
Stansted Express has begun a trial of overnight rail services aimed at improving public transport access to London Stansted Airport outside normal operating hours.

The summer trial, operated by Greater Anglia, introduces additional services every Friday night into Saturday morning between 3 July and 25 September. Most trains will run every 30 minutes between Stansted Airport and Tottenham Hale from 11.30pm to 5.00am, allowing passengers to connect with London's Victoria line Night Tube. A limited number of services will also start from or continue through to London Liverpool Street.
The additional trains are intended to serve passengers arriving on late-night flights or departing on early Saturday morning services.
Greater Anglia said passenger demand will be monitored throughout the trial to determine whether the overnight services should become a permanent feature of the timetable. Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy said the additional services would improve connectivity between the airport and central London while supporting wider efforts to encourage rail travel.
The initiative supports London Stansted Airport's long-term surface access strategy, which aims to increase the proportion of passengers and staff travelling to the airport by public transport.
As airline schedules continue to expand into early morning and late evening periods, improving transport options outside traditional operating hours has become an increasing focus for airports. Many UK airports experience peak departure banks before 7am and arrivals extending beyond midnight, creating periods when scheduled public transport services are limited.
Where rail or bus services are unavailable, passengers and airport employees often rely on private cars or taxis, increasing road congestion and associated emissions around airport sites. If the trial proves successful, it could provide a model for improving public transport connectivity during off-peak hours at other airports
