Swissport opens Birmingham integrated control centre to support UK and Ireland operations

Swissport has opened a new Integrated Control Centre (ICC) at Birmingham Airport as part of its investment in digital technology aimed at improving safety, operational oversight and aircraft turnaround performance across its UK and Ireland operations.

The 24-hour facility brings together operational control, telematics, artificial intelligence-supported monitoring, live video systems and geo-fencing into a single hub, providing real-time visibility of more than 2,000 items of ground support equipment used across the company's regional operations. According to Swissport, the centre is designed to help operational teams monitor equipment availability, respond more quickly to disruptions and improve the efficiency of day-to-day ground handling activities.

Swissport said the introduction of driver safety cameras and telematics was developed in consultation with employee representatives and implemented through an agreed framework with relevant stakeholders.

The Birmingham facility is expected to strengthen operational resilience during periods of disruption and peak demand by providing greater oversight of equipment deployment and resource allocation. The company also plans to expand the centre's capabilities ahead of the 2026/27 winter season by introducing live monitoring of aircraft de-icing operations.

Karen Cox, Chief Executive Officer of Swissport UK & Ireland, said the investment forms part of the company's wider strategy to support operational performance through technology while creating new skilled roles at Birmingham Airport.

Swissport is one of the world's largest providers of airport ground services and air cargo handling, operating at more than 300 airports in 49 countries. The company provides passenger services, ramp handling, cargo operations and airport hospitality services for airlines worldwide.

The new Integrated Control Centre forms part of Swissport's broader programme to digitalise airport operations through greater use of operational data, automation and real-time monitoring as airlines and ground handlers seek to improve efficiency and resilience amid growing passenger demand.
