WECA transport vision highlights potential mass transit link to Bristol Airport
The West of England Mayoral Combined Authority (WECA) has published a new transport vision that outlines the region’s long-term ambitions for a reliable, integrated and sustainable network, including a potential mass transit connection to Bristol Airport.

The document, titled A transport network you can trust, sets out how the region plans to improve travel for residents, businesses and visitors, while supporting economic growth and environmental goals.
The vision proposes improvements across multiple modes, from bus and rail upgrades to walking, cycling, and active travel infrastructure, with an emphasis on integrated services and accessible transport hubs.
A central highlight is the concept of a mass transit route linking Bristol city centre to Bristol Airport, which is currently the largest regional airport in the UK without a dedicated mass transit connection.
Mayor Helen Godwin described the vision as a blueprint for building trust in the region’s transport network. “We need a transport system that people can rely on, wherever they live, work or travel. Connecting the city to Bristol Airport with mass transit is not just about convenience, it is about supporting economic growth, reducing carbon emissions, and linking the region to national and international networks,” she said.
By improving connections between towns, cities and key transport hubs, the authority hopes to encourage sustainable travel and reduce reliance on private vehicles.
