Biggin Hill completes major runway upgrades to improve operational reliability for business flights

London Biggin Hill Airport (LBHA) has completed a large-scale runway resurfacing project — funded by an eight-figure investment from HSBC UK — aimed at improving durability and operational reliability for business aviation traffic.

The works included the installation of a new grooved asphalt surface, upgraded centre-line and LED lighting, and modern runway-visual range and weather reporting systems designed to provide pilots with clearer guidance and more consistent arrival conditions even in low-visibility weather.

Additionally LBHA has upgraded its meteorological and visibility reporting capabilities to offer continuous live weather information and enhanced instrument-based arrival support, potentially opening the airport to a wider range of aircraft and improving operational flexibility.

Robert Walters, Commercial Director, London Biggin Hill Airport, says, “This resurfacing project is a significant step in our ongoing investment in the airport’s core infrastructure. By enhancing the runway’s durability and performance, we’re giving operators clearer guidance and a more predictable arrival experience.

“Business aviation customers value confidence in their planning, and this work reflects our commitment to evolving the airport around the needs of pilots flying into the capital. We would like to thank HSBC UK for their ongoing support, without which the project would not have been possible.”

The upgrade is part of a broader capital investment programme at Biggin Hill, as the airport seeks to strengthen its business-aviation credentials.
