East Midlands Airport begins major airfield upgrades during winter runway closures
East Midlands Airport has launched a series of infrastructure upgrades this winter as part of a wider £120 million investment programme, including improvements to taxiways, lighting and the central apron where aircraft park.

Work at the airport — scheduled during a series of runway closures on select Wednesdays — will replace the surface of “Taxiway Bravo,” redesign the central apron to add four extra passenger aircraft stands (bringing the total to 28), and install upgraded lighting across all aprons to enhance visibility and safety.
Airport management says conducting the work during daytime closures, rather than overnight, will allow more work to be done efficiently while limiting disruption to passenger and cargo operations.
East Midlands Airport’s Asset Development Director Brian McCoubrey said, “These winter works are not just about maintenance - they’re an investment in the airport’s future, ensuring it continues to serve as a vital hub for passengers and freight across the UK and beyond.
“By investing in its taxiways, aprons and lighting systems, the airport is reinforcing its role as a key regional hub and ensuring it remains competitive, resilient and ready to meet the demands of modern aviation.”
The improvements reflect a broader commitment to modernise the airport’s infrastructure in response to evolving aviation demands, including growth in cargo operations and passenger services.
