The contract has been awarded to UK-based manufacturer Easat Radar Systems Ltd. The upgrade is partially funded through the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth Programme, supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
According to airport officials, the new radar will help air-traffic controllers better manage Cornwall’s busy and diverse airspace — improving operational safety and reliability for commercial, business and general aviation, as well as vital services such as those operated by the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust and the HM Coastguard.
Local political leaders say the upgrade supports Cornwall’s wider economic ambitions. Cllr Leigh Frost, leader of Cornwall Council, described the airport as being “at the heart of Cornwall’s economy”, providing essential global links for businesses and residents — and said the radar project reflects the kind of investment the Good Growth Programme is meant to support.
Airport engineers emphasised that the upgrade is a long-term commitment to maintaining high standards for air safety and resilience, ensuring Cornwall remains well-connected, and able to support diverse aviation activity including defence, commercial flights, emergency services and next-generation aerospace operations.
The radar upgrade forms a central part of the airport’s ongoing development strategy, seeking to future-proof operations and support growth in demand, while maintaining safety and operational excellence across Cornwall’s airspace.
