EasyJet confirms new base at Newcastle Airport as part of UK network expansion

EasyJet has announced plans to open a new operational base at Newcastle Airport, in a move that will see the airline position aircraft and crew at the northeast airport ahead of the 2026 summer season.

The airline already operates scheduled services from Newcastle, but establishing a base represents a change in how it will deploy capacity and staff locally. Under the new arrangement, EasyJet will station aircraft at the airport and recruit pilots and cabin crew based in the region. The carrier said this will “support the delivery of longer schedules and more connectivity” for passengers flying to and from Newcastle.

Kenton Jarvis, easyJet’s CEO, described the move as part of the airline’s broader UK growth strategy, supporting an expanded route network and increased weekly departures.

For an airline, designating a base — distinct from simply flying to an airport — typically means aircraft are overnighted and crew live locally, allowing more early‑morning departures and later return flights. Airlines often establish bases to expand frequency on existing routes, open new services and improve operational resilience in a region.

Nick Jones, Newcastle Airport’s CEO welcomed the announcement as a vote of confidence, reflecting sustained demand from both leisure and business travellers in the North East and northern England.
