Luton Airport completes £18m five month, overnight runway resurfacing project

London Luton Airport has completed an £18m overnight runway resurfacing project, the largest airfield engineering programme at the airport in two decades, aimed at boosting safety and reliability while minimising disruption to flights.

The 2.2km runway was resurfaced over five months, replacing 30,000t of asphalt, upgrading taxiways, and installing over 1,000 energy-efficient LED lights and a new weather sensor. Each night’s work ran from shortly after midnight until first light, allowing daytime flights to operate as normal.

The main contractor, Lagan Aviation & Infrastructure, oversaw the full design and build delivery, coordinating closely with airport teams and specialist sub-contractors for lighting and electrical systems. Brandi Davey, Lagan’s project manager, described the programme as “once in a generation,” highlighted the extensive planning required to keep operations running smoothly.

The airport says the upgrade strengthens the runway’s durability and ensures compliance with safety regulations while supporting future passenger demand. The work highlights the complexity of modern airfield projects, which rely on close collaboration between contractors, airport staff, and technical consultants to deliver major infrastructure improvements with minimal disruption.

London Luton Airport is operated by a consortium of which the majority shareholder is AENA, the world’s largest airport operator, and InfraBridge, a leading infrastructure investment manager. The airport is owned for community benefit by Luton Rising, a company wholly-owned by Luton Council. Airlines operating at the airport include Jet2, easyJet, Wizz Air, Ryanair, Tui, FlyOne, Sun Express and El Al.
