Bristol Airport submits plans for bigger and better airport with worldwide connections
Bristol Airport has submitted new plans aimed at expanding its capacity and upgrading passenger facilities, as part of a long-term programme to accommodate growing demand for air travel in the South West of England.

The proposals form part of a wider investment strategy that includes terminal expansion, airfield improvements and supporting infrastructure, building on earlier approvals that allow the airport to increase capacity from 10m to 12m passengers each year.
Bristol Airport is now planning to go further, with a longer-term ambition to reach up to 15m passengers annually.
The currently under construction £30m terminal extension will increase floorspace by around 45% and support the previously approved growth to 12m passengers a year.
Future phases outlined in the airport’s new master planning documents include potential runway and taxiway improvements to enable longer-haul services, as well as expanded apron space and operational facilities.
These changes are intended to support new international routes, including connections to North America and the Middle East, and to strengthen the airport’s role as a regional gateway.
The development programme is also linked to broader economic objectives. Previous assessments associated with expansion proposals indicated the potential for hundreds of on-site jobs and several thousand more across the region, alongside increased inbound tourism and business connectivity.
Bristol Airport’s plans reflect wider trends across UK regional airports seeking to expand capacity outside London. The airport is currently one of the largest regional gateways in England and serves both the South West and South Wales.
Increased capacity and new routes could reduce the need for passengers to travel to larger hubs such as Heathrow, while improving access to direct international services.
Dave Lees, Chief Executive of Bristol Airport, said, “Our proposals deliver what customers have told us they want to see at their local Airport. We will open up opportunities to visit places further afield and for businesses to expand into new international markets.
“This would improve international connectivity to key world cities enhancing trade, supporting high value sectors and improving inward investment, as well as supporting our world-leading universities in their research and innovation endeavours.”
