LanzaTech targets Humberside for £600m sustainable aviation fuel facility
LanzaTech Global, a US-based company specialising in converting carbon-rich industrial emissions into sustainable fuels and chemicals, has announced plans to develop a £600m sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel facility at Saltend Chemicals Park in Humberside.

Based upon LanzaTech’s proprietary gas fermentation technology, the project, known as DRAGON II, aims to produce SAF and renewable fuels from industrial emissions, supporting the UK’s net-zero aviation and transport goals.
The development at Humberside forms part of LanzaTech’s global strategy to expand carbon-to-fuel projects and support sustainable transport.
Construction is expected to begin in late 2026, with operations projected to start by 2029. The facility will create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs during construction and operations.
This announcement aligns with broader UK hydrogen and sustainable fuel policy initiatives. Nevertheless, industry groups, including the UK Hydrogen Energy Association, recently called for cross-ministerial action and timely allocation of funding rounds to accelerate deployment of low-carbon energy projects like LanzaTech’s facility. Delays in government funding and strategy updates, they warn, risk slowing investment and delivery.
