Samson Aviation invests in Newcastle Airport cargo operations as freight demand rises

Samson Aviation has made a significant investment in Newcastle Airport’s cargo operations, installing a main deck loader and upgrading equipment to handle larger and more specialised freight, including heavy machinery and aircraft components.

The move comes as cargo volumes at the airport reached a record 6,000 tonnes in 2024, driven by rising e-commerce and specialised freight demand.

The investment builds on Newcastle Airport’s 24-hour operations and existing freight village, enabling it to accommodate a wider range of goods and aircraft types.

Leon McQuaid, director of aviation development at the airport, said the upgrades would “strengthen Newcastle Airport’s position as a leading cargo gateway” and support more businesses choosing the airport for import and export needs.

The development complements the airport’s AirLink project, a proposed 750,000 sq ft logistics hub offering direct apron access for cargo operators and freight forwarders. AirLink is expected to create thousands of jobs and further stimulate the North East economy.

Local studies indicate Newcastle Airport supports over £1bn in economic activity annually, highlighting its growing importance in trade and logistics. The Samson Aviation investment is part of a wider strategy to enhance Newcastle Airport’s connectivity, cargo handling capabilities, and overall infrastructure.
